When social media personality MrBeast took on the trend, he rented out an entire theater. Universal Pictures, which distributed the film, also endorsed the trend on July 1, tweeting, “to everyone showing up to in suits: we see you and we love you.” To the sound of California rapper Yeat’s song “Rich Minion”-featured in the new film-Hirst posted clips of himself and his friends wearing dark suits and ties, going single file up an escalator, and mimicking the character Gru’s hand motions during the movie. The Rise of Gru was released in Australian theaters on June 23, a week earlier than in the U.S. So how did this all start?Ī week ago, Bill Hirst, an Australian teen, made one of the first renditions of the so-called #gentleminions trend in a TikTok video that has now received over 35 million views. Nearly 90% of The Rise of Gru’s audience has been 25 or under so far, with 25% of attendees younger than 12 years old, according to The Hollywood Reporter. But the movie’s success is also due to a viral TikTok trend, in which groups of mostly young men put on formalwear to watch the latest movie, and then share videos of their escapades on the social media platform under the #gentleminions hashtag. There are certainly people who were committed to seeing the latest installment of the highest-grossing animated film franchise of all time. The film brought in an additional $93.7 million from international markets. RACHELLE AKUFFO: That's that million magic. After premiering on July 1, Minions: The Rise of Gru raked in $125 million in domestic ticket sales over its four-day opening weekend. So apparently, there is something to the $125 mil. My 16-year-old absolutely loved this film. But I found out this is not just for kids. But for the most part, they do seem to be behaving like gentlemen, gentle minions, as it were.ĭAVE BRIGGS: I wouldn't expect to see men of that age at all in that movie. We did see some movie theaters in England saying that some of these groups were getting a little bit rowdy, sort of disrupting the movies for people. If you want to dress nicely for the movies, I'm not mad at it. And it was like the Spider-Man meme where everyone is like, well, why are you dressed up? So this thing has just really, really ballooned. Then he said when he went, he saw another group. We just had a formal event a few days before. He said, look, we were going to see the movie. ![]() I mean, one of the first people who did it, a young guy named Bill Hearst in Sydney, Australia, he created one of the first posts like this. RACHELLE AKUFFO: These days, you never know what's going to go viral. Universal Pictures took notice, tweeting to the gentle minions, we see you. The trend #gentleminions started on TikTok, as you might imagine. For the millions of you that saw the movie over the weekend, you may have noticed a peculiar sight, packs of young men in suits packing theaters. The largest animated opening since pre-pandemic. "Minions The Rise of Gru," shattering expectations, and in fact defying logic to some with a 4th of July weekend record, $125 million opening, if you can believe it or not. (SINGING) This may be the only opportunity that I got.ĭAVE BRIGGS: Rather remarkable.
